Parking Restriction Changes
From 1 July 2009, the first stage of the new City of Perth On Street Parking Policy will be introduced over a four year period.
What will this mean to the average motorist commuting to or visiting the city?
The main difference will be that parking restrictions will change. Currently, parking restrictions are in force from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to midday on Saturday, except where otherwise indicated by signage, such as at Barrack Square. However, on 1 July, this will be altered to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday, unless otherwise shown on signage. In addition, parking restrictions will apply on Sundays from midday to 6 p.m., although parking will be free. As before, parking outside these times will have no restrictions except where the signage shows differently.
The second difference will be that parking will be limited to a maximum of one hour within the CBD and all bays of fifteen minutes and over will be fee-paying.
Motor cyclists will now be required to pay for their parking, at 33% of the rate for cars.
These changes will only apply to on street parking; parking regulations and restrictions for car parks will remain unaltered.
The City of Perth uses the international standard for parking signs, as shown in the example below.
This sign tells motorists that, to the left of the sign, a motorist needs to purchase a ticket, and may park for a maximum of two hours, from 8 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday. At all other times, no restrictions and no payments are applied. The sign also indicates that the area to the right of the sign is restricted to a 15 minute loading zone for commercial or authorised vehicles during the times shown. At other times, parking is not restricted or paid. The times shown on the sign will change after 1 July 2009.
CPP urges motorists to look for and obey parking signs in the city.
