Public Art
The City of Perth has over 200 historical and modern public artworks scattered across the city, dating as far back as 1863 when the first sculpture was made in Western Australia. They will challenge your perceptions and enrich your understanding of life in Perth through the ages.
Fire, Water and Earth: The meteorite
The meteorite is a water art-piece created by the City of Perth and located at the southern end of Forrest Place. Made of orbicular granite from Mt Magnet, WA, the artwork symbolises a meteorite impact, a common phenomenon in WA.
A mist of atomised water shrouds the sphere during the hotter months and cools the surrounding air. Submerged fibre optic lights illuminate the water and mist and create an eerie quality after dark.
The Meteorite
Surrounding the sphere and its base is a swirling pattern of WA stone, incorporating images of lizards on black polished granite and pink stone.
The sphere can easily be stopped and turned by a child. Children (and adults) can dabble in the water, run through the mist or simply sit and watch the fascinating detail of the orbicular granite or the play of light on water or water on rock. The feature is wheelchair accessible.
