How do you get around?
Most people use the car.
A travel survey of residents in the Perth metropolitan area found that 80% of trips were by car. Of these trips, most drivers were travelling alone and often taking short trips.
By reducing car trips and using alternative TravelSmart methods of travel such as walking, cycling or public transport you can:
- reduce local traffic
- reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions
- improve your health through physical activity
- save money and time.
Wherever you are going, consider your options. That is what TravelSmart is all about.
The City of Perth has undertaken the following suite of travel behaviour change programs, under the banner of TravelSmart. TravelSmart assists people to drive less and to choose alternatives such as walking, cycling, and public transport.
TravelSmart Household Programme
The City of Perth has partnered with the Department for Planning and Infrastructure TravelSmart Household Program. The Program addresses the travel behaviour of residents in a community and focuses on local trips, such as those made for social activities and shopping. The Program uses an individualised marketing approach – in other words providing tailored information to individuals to maximise the use of alternatives to the private car for local trips.
The TravelSmart Household Program was rolled out in the City during March-April 2007 and is currently being surveyed to assess whether it was successful in changing behaviour.
TravelSmart Workplace Programme
TravelSmart Workplace assists businesses, government agencies and local councils to promote travel alternatives to employees and visitors. Cycling, walking, public transport, carpooling and teleworking are all TravelSmart options.
Since 2000, the City of Perth has participated in the TravelSmart Workplace Programme.
The City developed a Green Transport Plan in December 2005 and has since implemented a number of actions aimed at promoting alternative transport modes to the car, such public transport, cycling and walking. This includes holding a bike ride during Bikeweek, hosting an annual green commuter breakfast and improving end of trip facilities for cyclists.
City of Perth Local TravelSmart Guide
The Department for Planning and Infrastructure, in collaboration with has developed a City of Perth Local TravelSmart Guide. The two-sided map shows the key public transport, walking and cycling routes, as well as the location of local facilities and services in the area. The Guide also links in with surrounding Local TravelSmart Guides to facilitate more extensive journey-planning.
The Perth City Travelsmart Guide is available to download from the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.
Delivering the TravelSmart suite of activities is one of several actions the City has undertaken to reduce Corporate and Community greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in an effort towards meeting its GHG reduction targets set under the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign (internal link to CCP page).
