Perth City Link
Perth City Link, formerly known as the Northbridge Link, is a collaborative project between the Australian Government, the Public Transport Authority (PTA), Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and the City of Perth.

The $360 million rail project, scheduled for completed in 2014, is the first stage of the Perth City Link.
The scope of works includes:
- Sinking the Fremantle Line between William Street and Lake/King Street. This will create almost 600m of a new covered section of the Fremantle Line.
- Upgrading Perth Station with new tiling, lighting and services and convert the current Platform 9 into an island Platform 8/9.
- Creating a new tunnel under the northern end of the Barrack Street Bridge to service the new Platform 9.
- Extending the existing Joondalup line tunnel roof from Lake to Milligan Streets to be in line with the new Fremantle Line tunnel.
- Creating a new pedestrian underpass connecting Perth Underground Station to all the platforms at Perth Station.
The transport work will be delivered in two stages: Rail (2011-2014) and Bus (2014-2016).

Unveiling the future: Perth Station artist’s impressions
On Tuesday, 31 January, Premier Colin Barnett, Transport Minister Troy Buswell, Senator Louise Pratt (representing Federal Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese), and Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi visited the Perth City Link rail project site to mark the start of building the tunnel.
During the visit each level of Government placed a memento into a time capsule, which will be buried in Perth Station to be reopened in 2031.
Among the items placed into the capsule are the artist’s impressions of what Perth Station will look like with its new features in 2014. Visit the news section to read more and see the artist’s impressions.
Sinking the Fremantle Line for the Perth City Link presents a unique opportunity to improve Perth Station. These changes include:
- a new pedestrian underpass connecting all platforms to Perth Underground, providing one seamless transfer for passengers
- new track on the Roe Street side of Platform 9 to provide greater operational flexibility during special events and to meet Perth’s growing public transport needs
- extension to the Eastern Concourse at Platform 9
- upgrades to lighting, tiling and information displays
Perth Station works
On Saturday, 14 January 2012, the new stairs on Platform 5 were completed and opened for use.
Work is well under way in preparation for the start of work on the pedestrian underpass being built in Perth Station. Sections of Platform 5 and Platform 6/7 have been demolished and machinery positioned to dig the ready to start in February 2012. Fremantle Line tunnel
With the site cleared, Perth people can now begin to see what the result of sinking the Fremantle Line will be like.
In February, the equipment, or rigs, which will be digging the tunnel walls to create the foundations will begin operating.
Mid-2012: First section of the pedestrian underpass completed and Platform 5 reinstated.
Mid-2014: Sinking the Fremantle completed.
